When, God willing, I am once again walking
Among the beech trees in my homeland,
My thoughts will often return
To the beautiful country that is Portugal.”

A visit to Portugal, 1866 by Hans Christian Andersen

This unique and original project focuses on the world-famous Danish author and his journeying through Portugal in 1866. It is an initiative that allows participants to experience Portugal through the eyes of Hans Christian Andersen, even if only virtually. But it can be a nice prelude to a visit to Portugal once times are safer…

Hans Christian Andersen was already quite famous when he came to Portugal at the invitation of his friends, José and Jorge O’Neill, whose father was Portuguese Consul in Denmark. Travelling across the Iberian Peninsula, Andersen was completely enchanted with the beauty of Portugal. His trip took him to Lisbon, Palmela, Setúbal, Aveiro, Coimbra and to Sintra, with which he fell in love.

The virtual ‘Hans Christian Andersen Tour in Portugal’ offers a virtual visit to all the above-mentioned cities; including a personal mini-guide (PDF version – especially prepared by Moonluza) with Andersen’s observation and quotations about all these magnificent places and a 20EUR Mooncher (to be used till the end of 2023 for one of Moonluza’s projects/events).
